A 14 page research paper that investigates the work of Douglas Hyde (1860-1949), who was a scholar, playwright and cultural revivalist. He grew up in an area of Ireland that was rich with tradition and where the Irish language was still spoken by some of its inhabitants. Hyde received his education at Trinity College where he studied ancient Gaelic (Jang). By 1892, Hyde recognized that his native culture was in danger of completely perishing, despite a passionate national spirit. In a lecture given before the newly formed Irish National Literary Society on November 24, 1892, Hyde laid out the parameters of the problem and what he saw as the solution -- the de-Anglicization of Ireland. This examination of Hyde's philosophy demonstrates the utility of his plays, written in the Irish language, for exporting and promoting his philosophy in regards to the preservation of the Irish language and Irish culture. to have the oldest vernacular literature, as well as the largest collection of folklore in the entirety of Europe (Irish language). Irish is a Celtic tongue that shares Indo-European origins
with Scottish Gaelic and Manx and is distantly related to Breton, Welsh and Cornish. The Irish language is referred to as "Gaelige" (GALE-ga) by its speakers (Irish language). In 1600,
there were as many Irish-speakers in the world as English-speakers, whoever, English prevailed due to the fact that its speakers were wealthier and had better armies. Over the course of
centuries, Irish became the language of a disenfranchised people. It reentered the lives of the privileged classes with the advent of the Gaelic Revival. In 1893, Hyde founded the Gaelic
League, with the intention that the organization would inspire enthusiasm for Irish among non-speakers (Irish language). This was part of Hydes larger vision of de-Anglicization for Ireland. W.B. Yeats and
Lady Isabella Gregory are among Hydes admirers and, to help his cause, they founded the Abbey Theatre in Dublin for the promotion of the work of Irish playwrights (Irish language).
