The Bio-ecological Systems Theory (BST) developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner, a leading scholar in the field of developmental psychology, offers a model for child development that perceives individual development as occurring within the "system relationships" that make up the childs environment (Paquette and Ryan 2). Originally, Bronfenbrenner referred to the theory as "Ecological System Theory," but the prefix of "bio" was recently added in order to emphasize that a childs personal biology, that is, the childs own body, is the "primary environment fueling that childs development (Paquette and Ryan 2). It is the interaction of various systems, specifically, the "the childs maturing biology, his immediate family/community environment, and the social landscape" in general, which serve to direct the developmental process. Therefore, this theoretical perspective holds that in order to accurately perceive a childs development, one must first examine the child, the immediate environment, but also the interaction that occurs with the larger societal environment (Paquette and Ryan 2). A close examination of Dorriss autobiographical narrative of his son illustrates the various components of Bronfenbrenners theory. In BST, the term "microsystem" is used to describe the environmental layer that is closest to the child and which contains the relational features with which the child has direct contact (Paquette and Ryan 2). As this implies, the microsystem includes "family, school, neighborhood or childcare environments" (Paquette and Ryan 2). The principal issue in Adams microsystem is FAS. Prior to his adoption, Dorris was told that Adam was impaired, "the official diagnosis was mental retardation," but Dorris was certain that good parenting would be sufficient to overcome developmental delays (Couser 421).
