collaboration with others (Hartweg, 1991). The original ideas for this model emerged during the time Orem served as a nurse consultant for the Indiana State Board of Health, a position
she held from 1949 to 1957 (Hartweg, 1991). Her ideas evolved when she was working as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (Hartweg, 1991). In
that position, Orems job was to improve the curriculum of the vocational nursing curriculum (Hartweg, 1991). One of the things Orem realized during all those years was that nurses
could do nursing but they did not seem to be able to talk about nursing (Hartweg, 1991). For example, what is nursing was a question that could not really be
answered (Hartweg, 1991). Another question had to do with the conditions that existed that led people to decide they needed nursing (Hartweg, 1991). The answer initially was that when people
are unable to care for themselves because their health precludes self-care, they decide they need nurses (Hartweg, 1991). To this, Orem considered the role of nurses in many different situations,
such as in medical-surgical practice and in pediatrics (Hartweg, 1991). Interestingly, Orem credited her own ability to see the big picture, to engage in reflective and analytical thinking to her
own studies in numerous areas, such as formal logic, metaphysics, action theories, and to her readings of Aristotle, Aquinas and many other writers from many different fields (Hartweg, 1991). Orems
development of her own theory and model was further aided by two specific groups with whom she was involved, the Nursing Model Committee of the Nurse Faculty of the Catholic
