with deceit and trickery. They are also not necessarily tales which depict pleasant or honest marriages. However, in "The Franklins Tale" we have a very respectful and honorable marriage, and
a marriage that is greatly tested. Through the tests we find that many people end up sacrificing, or making the decision to sacrifice. In the following paper we analyze the
story as it involves Dorigens complaint in terms of sacrifice in "The Franklins Tale." Sacrifice In this tale we find Dorigen longing for her husband, and that is
her complaint for the most part. She is sad that he is gone, and she is incredibly depressed and worried. But, her complaint turns as we see a suitor who
loves her begging for her affections. She is desperate and agrees to be his if only he can remove the rocks from the coastline that make landing, for a ship,
so dangerous. She never truly believes that he can do this and that is why she made the agreement, or promise. However, he does come up with an answer and
she finds herself immersed in a new and perhaps more powerful complaint. Her complaint is that she has promised to give herself to this man. Her husband returns and she
tells him of what she has promised. He tells her that she must keep her promises and that he will respect her for doing so. But, as would be expected
she does not wish to do this though she goes to the man and tells him that she will keep her promise. He is very impressed by her integrity and
chooses not to take her promise, allowing her to return to her husband as untouched. In this we see that Dorigen is willing to sacrifice her honor and her
