they first appear. In Wildes novel, for example, we
are presented with a scenario in which, on the surface, it is comparatively easy to make moral judgments about the characters. Dorian himself, as Gates (2004) points out, has been
compared to Stevensons Dr Jekyll, but whereas Stevenson dealt with the fragmentation of the self, Wilde points to a much deeper fragmentation of society as a whole. In Dr Jekyll,
the monstrous nature of a single human being was countered by the more positive values of social culture: in Dorian Gray, the idea that the whole world is "monstrous" is
constantly reiterated. Gates notes, for instance, that Lord Henry sees the law as monstrous, Dorian refers to his own pleasure in the portraits changes as monstrous and even Basil, the
artist responsible for the portrait, comes to see it as devilish.
In many ways, the evil and rotten-ness which the portrait comes to represent are exemplifying the monstrousness of society as a whole, not just Dorian himself. Any analysis
of the moral turpitude of Lord Henry, therefore, must be carried out within the parameters of such a society, rather than from the readers own ethical standpoint. One could ask,
for instance, whether or not Lord Henrys actions are in any way justified simply because they are not out of alignment with the corrupt society in which he lives. It
