the darker tone of the book. But for all its flaws the book is intriguing and Dorians descent into madness more than makes up for its failings. This paper considers
the way in which Dorians views of beauty develop and change in three different chapters of the book. Discussion There is an extremely strong undertone of homoeroticism in the
book, possibly occasioned by the fact that Wilde himself was homosexual. At any rate, his descriptions of the relationships among the three men-Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton-seem
better suited to descriptions of passionate lovers than of mere friends. However, it is also possible that reading the book with 21st century sensibilities leads readers to attribute feelings where
none are present. But the constant repetition of both mens admiration of Dorian Grays stunning physical beauty, the fact that Basil says he cant stand it when the boy is
not with him, and Henrys near-flirtation with the younger man are very strange. However, rather than suggesting some sort of homosexual affair, it is probably much closer to Wildes intent
that these expressions of love and beauty be considered in a much more abstract way: Gray is Basils muse. When the young man is present, Basils work is better than
when he is not. In short, Gray inspires the painter as no one else has ever done, and as an artist, Basil doesnt want anything to interfere with the creativity
that seems to flow only in Grays presence; his painting of Gray is the finest thing he has ever done. Harry is much more cynical. He seems to enjoy manipulating
