Particularly notable are artists Donatello and Ghiberti whose works will be compared and contrasted in this paper after a brief introduction of each artist. Additionally, this paper will demonstrate that
Donatellos works are far more expressive than those created by Ghiberti. Donatellos works shine; they are unique even though they were created with the same materials and often about the
same subjects like other artists of the day. Yet, Donatellos art has been critically acclaimed by numerous experts and he stands out in a crowd of extraordinary talent. Italian sculptor,
Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi is commonly known as Donatello (Nicholson, 1996). He was a major influence during the Italian Renaissance. His early works included statues; particularly notable is
his creation of a statue of David early in his career, followed by the more well known version in bronze (1996). The next period of his artistic life prompted him
to create sculpture where Classical influence was paramount (1996). His creation of a nude male was significant for the time period he lived in; it was actually the first freestanding
nude known to have been made since ancient times (1996). His work during the third period of his life, when divided by artistic endeavors, was created while he resided in
Padua. The work of Donatellos fourth, and final, period, after his return to Florence around 1454, reveals work that is noted for its sharply corrugated surfaces; these enhance the strongly
emotional and impressionistic characteristics of the subject matter (1996). Lorenzo Ghiberti was also an Italian sculptor and a major figure in Italian Renaissance art. He was born in Florence also.
