We can envision romance stories as novels, science fiction stories as novels, and even stories based somewhat on real events as novels, such as seen in the works of Charles
Dickens. However, when told that the story "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes is considered to be the first novel, we may well find ourselves refining what we see as
the definition of a novel. The following paper examines what makes a novel a novel and why Don Quixote is a novel, and likely the first novel. Novel First
and foremost what makes a novel truly a novel is its reflection of real life. We can look at the works of Charles Dickens and see that they reflect real
life, but they are also based partially on real events, and have no real magical qualities or imaginative qualities about them. They are perhaps too much like real life. On
the other hand some novels have too much magic and they become less than a novel. Science fiction seems to be, generally speaking, less than a novel for it is
primarily based on unrealistic events in nothing more than a setting of adventure. There are also novels that are referred to as possessing magical realism, works found through writers such
as Garcia Marquez. These are often too artistic to really be a novel. While these are only a few of the types of written stories, or novels some would say,
that exist, we begin to see that they are stories which are primarily focused on getting some image across, whether it be fantastical or serious or based in reality in
a harsh manner. What makes for a true novel is perhaps many different things. In a true novel we want a character who has faults, flaws, much like the tragic
