meager roots to take his place as Mexicos president. Her served not one but five terms, (1861-1865), (1865-1867), (1867-1871), and (1871-1872), in this esteemed role. He is remembered
as much for his concern for the common people as he is for his exemplary involvement with Mexicos valiant resistance of the French that occupied their country in 1861 and
his restoration of the Mexican Republic. Born in 1806 to peasant parents in a small village in the Mexican state of
Oaxaca, Juarez was orphaned when he was only three years old and had to work as a common laborers until he was twelve years old just to earn his room
and board (Blancke, 1975). Illiterate, impoverished, and uneducated Juarez was a desperate for a better life. He made the long walk into the city of Oaxaca in search
of that life. Although he could only speak his native language Zapotec, he quickly secured work as a domestic servant and studied as he could. He was diligent
enough that he impressed lay Franciscan Antonio Salanueva who placed him in the seminary (Blancke, 1975). Juarez graduated in 1827 and then continued his studies in law (Blancke, 1975).
Seven years later, he had his degree in law and took his first job as an attorney in 1834 (Blancke, 1975). Juarez quickly moved up the ladder to
governor to Oaxaca in 1847, a position that he served well in until 1853 when he went into exile. In exile, Juarez fled
to New Orleans, Louisiana because of distaste for the military dictatorship of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In New Orleans he took up menial labor once again, working in
