With heterosexual domestic violence complaints, there are legal remedies. A woman can call the police and say that her husband is stalking her, or beating her, and that is taken
seriously. When a gay man is harmed by his lover, he may not feel as if he will be taken seriously by the police. He may be mocked. This is
true even though he can call in a report when anyone attacks him. Men often are in brawls. Still, in a gay domestic violence dispute, a victim will not have
the added recognition of being in a domestic violence situation. In the homosexual community-while things are different today than they were when the community was closeted-there is a lack
of recognition of the homosexual communitys dilemma. Domestic violence exist in gay and lesbian relationships too but it seems to be underreported and hardly recognized. There is no special status
these groups claim which would exclude them from violent relationships. Interestingly, McClennen (2003) writes as a social worker who is well versed in domestic violence literature, but admits to knowing
little about how the problem manifests in the gay and lesbian community. She explains that it was not until her brother began to become intimate with other men, and found
himself in trouble, that it sparked her interest (McClennen, 2003). It seems that while many professionals ignore the problem of domestic violence in this subculture, things are slowly changing. There
is some literature on the topic, but again, domestic violence in the gay community goes underreported. In part, the situation is attributable to a culture that does not recognize gay
