ages and sexes. 2. Women and children, however, are more often the victims of domestic violence. 3. Our nation has grown progressively more cognizant of this
problem since the 1970s and, more specifically, the 1979, recognition of the US Surgeon General that violence was a priority in terms of addressing public health concerns. 4.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has emerged as one of the lead agencies in the study of this problem. 5. The CDC serves a multifaceted role in
this study. It serves as a central repository for all types of data relating to domestic violence. It collects this data through direct monitoring and through the perusal
of the data collected by other agencies and organizations. More importantly, perhaps, the CDC is active in risk analysis and prevention. It seeks an understanding of why domestic
violence occurs and what can be done about it. By far the most innocent victims of domestic abuse are the children.
