Taiwan pertaining to domestic violence, offering comparison to the legal standard on this issue in the US. In 1993, a horrific incident, the stabbing death of a husband by
his wife, shocked Taiwanese society. As reporters delved deeper into the incident, the details of domestic violence that characterized the household were made known. Beginning with the wifes rape while
a ninth grader, it was a tale of continuous and brutal domestic abuse against the wife and their children (Chao, 2005). When Ruweng reported the abuse go the police, no
official action was taken, other then "friends were asked to mediate" (Chao, 2005, p. 30). However, Taiwan has dramatically improved its response to domestic violence, becoming the first East Asian
country to enact major legislation criminalizing domestic abuse (Chao, 2005). The Prevention of Domestic Violence Law was enacted in June of 1998 (Lo, 2006). It consists of seven chapters
in total and the term "domestic violence" is defined as "any illegal physical and mental infringement between family members" (Lo, 2006, p. 151). The scope of the law is relatively
wide, as it covers not only personal physical injuries, but also psychological and emotional abuse. Furthermore, it encompasses the extended family members in its scope, including all blood relations as
