identifying indicators of violence is what the nations laws need to address. As an example of what has transpired across the country in
the effort to prevent domestic abuse from escalating and therefore recurring, California, Arkansas and Michigan have enacted laws that mandate health care workers - doctors, social workers, etc. - to
report injuries involving domestic violence. Stronger in legal conviction than other legislation before it, this law provides for full disclosure of the abuser to law enforcement officials, as well
as protects the reporting parties from liability risks inherent to such admission. Moreover, if a health care worker fails to report an obvious case of abuse, he or she
will be charged with a misdemeanor crime. One of the ways in which the policy is intended to work is to bring to light the prevalence of Michigans battered
women, a reality not always recognized by the states health care system. While part of the policy is to protect and bring justice to the battered victim, it is
also to educate the health care industry about how to identify abuse and the steps necessary to report it. Historically, health care workers have been remiss about reporting incidents
of battering not because they lack compassion for their abused patients, but because they have lacked appropriate training in how to discern its presence. Others, however, have historically taken
