Domestic violence is often perceived as being more prevalent among lower income individuals than among higher economic classes but whether or not this perception is valid is a subject of considerable controversy. On the one hand there are reports in the professional literature that would seem to support this correlation. There are also reports in the literature, however, that refute this correlation. The intent of this paper is to weigh out the various issues that enter into domestic violence and to present an opinion as to whether income is a factor. Domestic abuse has a multitude of faces. On the one hand there are men abusing women. On the other, there are women abusing men. By far the most innocent victims of domestic abuse, however, are the children. Whether the children suffer directly (by being the actual target of the abuse) or indirectly (by simply being in a household that suffers from abuse), they face both short-term and long-term impacts of a behavior that they cannot control. Adult victims suffer immeasurably from domestic abuse as well. These facts make domestic abuse one of the most troubling problems of our society. According to U.S. Department of Justice (2005) statistics an estimated seventy-three percent of family violence victims are women. Pregnant women, in particular, are likely to suffer abuse (U.S. Department of Justice, 2005). Indeed, murder is the second leading cause of death among expectant women. Women too, however, can be abusers. Indeed, Denov (2004) reveals that many women are guilty of sexually abusing children. Many more abuse the men in their lives. ...
