a personal thing, in many cases, it is not seen in the same light as other violent crimes. The following paper examines how and why domestic violence is considered different
than criminal violence, or other forms of violence. Violence and Domestic Violence For the most part we, as a society, are raised to believe that solving any of
our problems through violence is not good. We are of the belief that violence, in the society, is very bad and people are constantly punished by the law when they
beat another person up or use violence in public. As one author notes, "We were taught to think that criminal violence occurred on the streets or in bars. Home was
thought to be a safe place" (APA Online, 2005). However, at the same time most people have always been aware of the fact that violence takes place in the
home as well. The violence in the home has been thought to be a private matter, the business of a family. For example, spanking children for misbehaving has been quite
common, and even hitting children with sticks or belts has been common and often recommended through history for controlling children in a house. In essence, some level of control, through
physical actions, has often been seen in the family, in the home. But people have believed that violence in the society is wrong because it is generally seen as one
