Typically it is women and children that are the victims of this violence. An example can be found in Theresa Miller and her three young children. Theresa has
lived with her husband some twelve years and most of those years she has been the victim of domestic violence. Although the husband has not directly abused the children,
they are indirect victims of his violence as well. Thomas, the husband, belittles Theresa constantly. He makes unrealistic demands in terms of what he expects in regard to
the house and the children and her ancillary duties to him. Recently Thomas has become physically violent as well. He started by slapping her and then this escalated
into his punching and even knocking her down a flight of stairs. Theresa and her children are definitely in a crisis situation. To survive she must take deliberate
steps towards insuring her and her childrens physical protection. Fortunately, Theresa has made the first necessary step in rectifying her situation. She
has accepted the reality that her husband is in fact an abuser and that she must leave her home if she is to insure her familys safety. Theresa considered
obtaining a protective order to keep her husband away from her and her children but she realizes that this would only enrage her husband further and, as long as he
knew her location, it would not be a deterrent to him. She actually fears for her life at this point. Theresa has left her home with only the
clothes on her and her childrens back. She has managed to make her way to a shelter for abused women and is now seeking counseling on how to further
