Though domestic violence is known to exist at all socioeconomic levels, it is popularly believed to be a greater problem of groups of lower income and education. The premise here is that those women of higher socioeconomic levels are less likely to report domestic violence. They frequently have images to uphold in the community, and their husbands often have greater influence and financial resources, often used to thwart efforts by intervention agencies or even the local courts. This is a proposal for research seeking to determine whether women of higher socioeconomic status truly are less likely to report domestic abuse. Introduction In 1995, America was treated to an aerial view of O.J. Simpson driving through the streets of Los Angeles, ostensibly in an attempt to evade the police seeking his arrest for the murder of his wife Nicole Simpson. Joan Farr, director of Metro-Dade Family and Victim Services in Miami, says that the case provides a "classic example of domestic abuse among the wealthy and prominent. Theres a myth that domestic violence is more common in the middle and lower classes ... In fact, it is simply more visible in those classes.
