the public has gained a broader understanding of the issue and now realizes how significant a problem it has become. Spousal abuse was once something that was kept under
wraps, because it was more readily tolerated than in contemporary times. Currently, however, tolerance towards domestic violence - at least in the United States - has reached an all-time
low. No longer are men permitted to lay a hand on their wives without having to answer for it. SECTION II - REVIEW OF LITERATURE No community is
safe from domestic violence. Around the world, tolerance levels may vary with regard to how the assaulting spouse is punished; however, there is no one place immune to the
effects of spousal abuse. Particularly vulnerable are those countries where women have no marital rights and are deemed as nothing more than slaves to their homes and husbands.
For example, women in the Philippines and Zimbabwe experience considerably increased incidence of domestic violence than do women in the United States. Protection for these women is virtually unavailable,
