The perpetrator uses the violence to control the victim and, therefore, his world. In the past domestic violence has received little attention because it was hardly thought a crime let alone grounds for intrusion into someone elses life and personal matters. In recent years however, there has been much progress in the area of domestic violence and prosecuting those who commit these acts of violence. Police now generally take these cases very seriously as the consequences of not handling the matter can indeed be tragic. Every year, many women are killed due to domestic violence. Generally, it is a case of a man who was enraged and went too far. Other times, the man actually decides to kill the woman and sets out to do just that. Still other times, the batterer does not mean to kill his victim but does so accidentally, in the process of carrying out other violence against her. Regardless of the causes, it is very important to have a thorough understanding of this topic in order to be able to better respond to the needs of domestic violence victims. These cases truly require not only support from law enforcement but also from the whole community. What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence, or battering as it is sometimes called, is "a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence" (What is Battering, 2002, See also What is Abuse? - A Warning List, 2002).
