a situation that seems incredibly foreign and unfathomable to most people in relationship to why women would stay with such men and why they would tolerate such treatment. But, for
many it is a way of life and a way of life that has no clear or even hopeful sense of escape. Some women feel that their only response is
to react, retaliate, and kill their partner in self-defense. The following paper examines the issue, considering whether they are justified or not in such murder cases, with a focus on
how these women feel they have little choice in the matter. Domestic Abuse and Murder In looking at the reality of
domestic abuse and violence in the United States it may well come as a shock to note that, "Three or more women are killed from domestic violence every hour in
America. This is said to be Americas most predictable murder" (Self Defense-4-Women, 2009). Yet, there seems to be very little done to prevent such atrocities in the nation. Granted, there
are many groups and organizations that are aimed at helping women who are victims of abuse, but these women are generally far too fearful to get help and they are
often likely to downplay the violence they are experiencing, even to doctors and health professionals (Dickson, 2004). It is also important to
note that most people in the nation, including judges and juries, cannot "understand why a person would remain in or return to an abusive situation, and why the person would
