dolphins saving the lives of swimmers have been truly awe-inspiring (Livermore 44). Dolphins are prominent members of the Delphinidae family, and have distinguished themselves because of their amazing cognitive
abilities (McKinney et al. 46). They can be anywhere from eight to ten feet in length, typically weigh approximately 400 pounds, can have at least 26 teeth in each
side of their jaws, and are capable of swimming up to 35 miles per hour (McKinney et al. 46). They are classified not as fish but as mammals because
they give birth instead of hatching eggs and they breathe with lungs and not gills (McKinney et al. 46). How dolphins swam their way from the high seas into
the uncharted waters of modern medicine is perhaps a story that could only happen in America. Since dolphins have long been known for their playful, frolicking ways, and also
for their gentle and compassionate natures, some therapists have come to believe that these animals can achieve what other humans cannot - to offer inspiration and motivation to patients suffering
serious physical, neurological, and psychological conditions. After several research studies, an increasing number of therapists have come to the conclusion that dolphins could provide a piece to a perplexing
medical puzzle that has long been missing. They can, these dolphin aficionados maintain, "improve the quality of life" in situations once thought to be hopeless (Livermore 44). The
dolphins spontaneity, joie de vivre, and amazing ability to communicate nonverbally can be an indispensable therapeutic tool, and by the early 1990s, up to 100 medical professionals were actively encouraging
