President Roosevelt knew this in 1944. It is as true today as it was then. Roosevelts New Deal put people to work. Between 1933 and 1944, the homicide rate almost
halved; there was a dramatic decrease in the number of suicides and the size of the economy more than doubled (Hudson, 1996). In the United States, reputed to
be the wealthiest nation in the world, one out of every five children live below the poverty line. The proportion of the working poor has soared. In 1968, the minimum
wage represented 86 percent of the wage that was needed to bring a worker and his or her family out of poverty. In 2000, the minimum wage represented less than
64 percent of what was needed to rise above the poverty line. The minimum wage needed to simply meet the poverty line is $8.20 an hour. However, analysts have calculated
that an individual needs to earn $18 per hour for what would be considered a living wage (Responsible Wealth, 2000). Poverty affects every aspect of a society -
negatively. Lacking financial security, people live in fear and anxiety. Not just those who are living below the poverty line, the entire population. Roosevelt called for "a decent standard of
living for all individual men and women and children." He said, "Freedom from fear is eternally linked with freedom from want" (Hudson, 1996). Roosevelt fought for an Economic Bill of
Rights - he was a visionary who knew that poverty has a negative impact on the society and on the nations economy. Reducing the level of poverty would:
