He seizes the emergency room at Hope Memorial, the facility where his son hovers near death" (9D). Again, this is an ordinary, upstanding citizen. John obeys authority, but he becomes a felon and crosses a line. He takes hostages because his son will not be given the transplant he needs in order to live. John believes that this is unfair. How can his son die because an insurance company will not approve a procedure? This sense of outrage prompts the protagonist to defy authority. John is disobedient. This film demonstrates that there is a line drawn where someone will become unruly. For some, the line is very close to where an individual lives, but for others, it is quite far. Everyone has a threshold. And in John Q., his act is actually morally admirable by many. Those who might disagree categorically might still suggest that in this case, an exception should be made. There was nothing else he could do. The idea of obedience in society, when someone should keep their mouths closed and when someone should act, is subject to debate. Any politician who has an emotional outburst, or simply shows enthusiasm, seems to violate normative behavior and is immediately ostracized. But obedience can be seen in a good light and usually is. For example, obedience is a part and parcel of the social contract. On the other hand, there is a fear when examining blind obedience. Everyone remembers the Holocaust and this sends shivers down the spines of millions.
