The mass media, which looks to attract an audience though viewing figures is often accused of manipulating the audience with biased presentation of stories, conforming to cultural or social stereo types and sensationalising the items it presents, regardless of if they are factual or factual. This is then seen as creating an audience that is influenced by these presentations, skewing perspective and manipulating an audience dependant on the media (Brown, 1963). Conversely we may also argue that the media is a part of society, created by it to satisfy the many demands, and constrained by the social constructs that maintain any society (Glover, 1984). Here we may argue that instead of the media manipulating society, it is merely a creation of society, reflecting the values and expectations, not creating them. If we argue this it is apparent that whatever point we start from there is a symbiotic relationship, with a bilateral influence. However, this does not answer the question. When we also consider the way the media is used by some individuals and a recognition of the power of the media the situation is further complicated, and may lead to an abuse with wither well meaning or perverse intentions (Trowler, 1996). If the media is an influence, and knows it, then in a competitive environment where income relies on an audience the media must manipulate this to there own ends.
