There is little doubt that teamwork is always the best method of working, in some circumstances teamwork may not be the most efficient way of operating. The key is in knowing the difference. In an organisation where there is the use of teamwork is successful it an be argued that it is the culture and the attitudes that are more important that the more piratical aspects such as who leads the team and the design of structure of the team. However, it can also be argued that with bad leadership or poor and inappropriate structure the chances of success will be lessened. To consider this we need to look at the theory that underpins the use of teams and how they can be successful and assess to what degree leadership and structure are important and to what degree the company culture and approach is important. There are many theories regarding the development lifecycle of a team, where conflicts are resolved and norms are created. However, this should be the same lifecycle, if true, whatever the way teamwork is implemented and as such it is the way the teams are put together and structured that are the issue of this paper.
