While there are those that would dispute the contention, family structure plays a definite role in adolescent development. Family structure, however, can be affected by a
variety of factors and this, in turn, can detrimentally affect adolescent development. Factors such as divorce, for example, can change an adolescent living environment from a two parent household
to a single parent household. Despite the claims that children are resilient and that decisions between a husband and wife as to whether to stay together or not should
not be made on the basis of the potential impacts to the children, radical changes in family structure can result in numerous developmental problems. The fact that divorce was
even an option for an adolescents parents can negatively affect them not just in the short term but in the long term as well. Adolescents, after all, pattern their
lives to a great degree on the lives of their parents. Family disruptions affect everything from their views of the opposite sex, to their marital expectations, to their likelihood
of developing problem behaviors at some point in their lives. Discussion
Parents serve, either consciously or unconsciously as role models for their children. Gender roles develop in part, for example, on the basis of what a child
observes in the parental unit that comprises his or her home. When a child has only one parent with whom they are in close contact there cannot help but
