Our world hardly even resembles the world as it existed just a few generations ago. Ever expanding human populations has encroached
on natural areas both directly and indirectly. We build cities in the place of old growth forests and golf courses in the place of wetlands. The vast prairies
have been turned under by the plow or grazed over with cattle. Our air and water are polluted and what water does remain is in short supply. Not
surprisingly, many have protested mans impact to the environment. Environmental laws have been put in place and our young are now being educated about the hazards of destroying everything
that is natural or irreversibly altering it. For some the environmental movement has become much more than a political quest or even a personal awakening, however. For some
it has become what a few have even contended is a religion. They have dubbed this so-called religion "deep ecology". The intent of this paper, however, is to
argue that deep ecology, while critically important in its perspectives and suggestions for protecting the environment, is not a religion. It is simply a complex realization that mankind is
