to mind with regard to the way any given series might be compiled and broadcast. Among them is the concept of pro-filmic and pro-filmic convention, narrative versus fiction, subjects
versus characters; and mythic narratives versus mimetic narratives. In considering the inclusion of pro-filmic and pro-filmic conventions within the framework of documentary television, one only has to think back to
any number of documentaries that depicted events where there was little or no reliable factual history. To be sure, there are many situations where an event has been known
to occur, but there is no true substantiation that the happening occurred as portrayed in the documentary. Directors, producers and writers utilize the best of their abilities to put
together an impression that could easily be accepted as the actual circumstances, which oftentimes includes manipulating an otherwise unstylized reality in such a way that the result has style.
In the situation where there are no real personal accounts of a given event, pro-filmic generic conventions provide a context, iconography, language and set of motivations for epic and tragedy
to make it irrelevant whether or not the details are portrayed correctly. The distinction between narrative and fiction is that narrative is derived from reality, whereas fiction is born of
someones imagination. That is not to say that either one presents a better form of documentary than the other, but rather to recognize that ones foundations is based in
