had done years ago prior to the advent of personal computers and other communications technology. Today, busy executives are on cell phones that have Caller ID and use e-mail. They
may type memorandums on personal computers because it is much easier than the days when typewriters were used and every mistake required correction tape and tedious fixes. In the past,
there were secretarial pools, mostly comprised of women and in fact, many women of yesteryear aspired to becoming secretaries, nurses or teachers. There was little else a woman could do.
Also, there was a sort of reverse prejudice where men were not deemed masculine if in fact they were to take a job that was reserved for the female sex.
However, times have changed and women are found in traditionally male occupations and men in womens roles. For a time, there was the "male nurse," but gradually, the qualifier became
unnecessary. A nurse can now be male or female. That said, prejudice does linger and in the film Meet the Parents for example, the male protagonists position as a nurse
made him the object of ridicule. In respect to the administrative assistant position, prejudice does linger. It is not as if women are simply more capable of performing the tasks
well, but that male administrative assistants are deemed to be out of place. A male executive is used to having a female assistant as that is how things have always
been. Women executives also may be intimidated by a male underling as it is thought that females would take these positions that are inherently feminine. Of course, this phenomenon is
a social construction and not something reliant on biology. It is not as if women are born organizers or typists. The role of the administrative assistant is complex and
