the egg? We may have begun by designing, developing, creating and managing information systems but the beast has turned on us. Lets use a true and very recent event. Central Florida was hit by three hurricanes in five weeks. Millions of people evacuated their homes. Millions of people lived without power for a duration of several hours to several weeks. Each hurricane shut down stores. Most grocery stores had enough generator power to be open, to run the registers but not to engage their electronic inventory audits, to have dim lighting in the store but not enough for refrigeration. Gas stations closed, many totally out of fuel and those that did have fuel did not have electricity to run the pumps. Many aspects of daily life stopped abruptly. Small businesses dependent upon their computers could not operate, some went out of business. These examples are far more valid than any document from the literature because they was recent, they was real, they affected millions of people and many Floridians have still not recovered even as this paper is written. The story clearly points to our dependence on information systems. The lack of power brought electronic commerce to a halt. Those dependent on their computers could not work. Information systems manage us, not the other way around. Information systems affect every aspect in our lives (Penn State World Campus, 2004). They are at the root of our telephone systems, they are critical in our banks, when we fill up our gas tanks, when we use the ATM, when we check out at most stores, even our automobiles have information systems built into them (Penn State World Campus, 2004).
