Theories abound as to why people commit crime. One of these theories purports that some
people are genetically predisposed to a life of crime. There is, in fact, considerable support for the theory of genetic determinism, the theory that genetics can be an important
determinant in whether or not an individual will turn to crime. This evidence includes comparisons of twins separated at birth and raised in different environments as well as other
adoptions studies where individuals of known genetic background are raised in adoptive families that differ considerably from their biological families. Additional evidence that genetics can be an important determinant
in crime include studies involving the relative levels of testosterone in those who choose a life of crime and those that do not. That said, the more acceptable explanation
of why some people commit crimes and others do not involves a consideration of both genetics and environment. One of the more intriguing
contentions that genetics were a causative factor in crime came in the trial of Richard Speck, the man convicted of the 1968 murders of eight student nurses in Chicago.
