aims of the union are multifaceted with membership being sought by many countries in order to giant the perceived benefits of membership., These benefits are often though to increase the level of prosperity of a country in the way that trade is adjusted. The single currency adds to price transparency and as such the poorer countries, that are invariably those that have a competitive advantage on labour cost attract investment. However, there are also indications that the theory may indicate increased trade takes place but not that this creates increased relative prosperity and increases the disparities between the inequalities of living standards in the different member states. However, there are also common social and regional policies that promote convergence and may counteract the economic disparities. Countries that whish to gain membership of the EU need to satisfy several criteria before membership is granted. One of these looks to the social and political conditions in a country. This alone may be seen as an equalising effect. Member states must "achieved stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities" (A?kinis, 2000). This may be seen as bringing countries closer together with common standards on which country. This is the basis of EU idealism. EU social policy extends form the need for freedom and democracy and has a duel role.
