of the country. Bearing these realities in mind we focus on the university and whether this particular institution is benefited from sports. The following paper examines various perspectives and discusses
the economics and the spirit of the community of the university, discussing whether or not sports actually benefit a university. Sports and the University It should be noted,
first and foremost, that the information being provided and examined is only offered as suggestive for the student. The examination which follows is tutorial and as such should be used
by the student in better developing their own perspective concerning whether or not sports benefit a university, and whether the university is really the issue behind university sports. With that
in mind we first turn to one particular university which is arguing for the benefits of sports, and increased fees. UNT has asked that the students support athletic programs for
several reasons. The school argues that such support will greatly enhance the value of the students degree, will "Increase the universitys visibility and improve its reputation, both regionally and nationally,
Create more school spirit and pride, Increase alumni and donor participation and support, Enhance funding for varsity sports programs, especially womens sports, Provide access to new academic and recreational, club
and intramural sports facilities," and "Help to recruit student athletes who succeed academically and compete at the highest intercollegiate levels and win" (Anonymous Athletic Fees Increase Student Vote, 2002; athleticsfee).
