Greek mythology. He was the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. Herakles typified bravery and might and strength although he did not always use his talents for
good works. But, this very sense of a dualistic nature is very important to understand when discussing Herakles, because he was indeed dualistic. He had the horrible, violent,
murderous side and well as the side that was loving and wished for peace. Although half mortal, upon his death Herakles
was granted godhood and was welcomed to Mount Olympus to reside with the other gods. Once at Mount Olympus with the other gods, he would marry the goddess Hebe
who was the daughter of Zeus and Hera. He became quite well known and one of the more popular gods due to his position as a half-mortal half-god.
"While Heracles is often boorish and a being of gross appetites and homicidal passions...he is also portrayed as a culture hero: ridding the world of monsters and lawless creatures, ending
human sacrifice, and performing useful engineering feats" (Who Was Hercules?). Again, this allows us a glimpse into the dualistic nature of Herakles and how he battled, within himself, these
very opposing forces. There is an evident duality to Herakles. On the one hand, he has a compassionate side that truly wants to end the destruction he is creating
and wants to simply be allowed to live his life peacefully. On the other hand, he is responsible for many brutal murders - including among them his own wife
and children. "In his encounters with men, women, children, and beasts, Herakles is not usually remembered for improving their health" (Salowey). "Herakles is a contradiction, a hero who
