for divorce. The term "special needs" encompasses a broad expanse of children with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Physical special needs encompass children born with birth defects, such
as cerebral palsy, which can tax parents both emotionally and financially. "Special needs" also refers to children with cognitive or emotional problems. Children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) typically
have difficulty with impulsive behavior that, in turn, initiates problems with control of their emotions (Zambo, 2007). Similarly, children with emotional disorders (ED) have extreme difficulty in coping with
how they feel (Zambo, 2007). They can either be "overly emotional or not emotional enough," and this factor is often externalized as aggressive, non-compliant behavior (Zambo, 2007). As with physical
special needs, cognitive and emotional special needs children are emotionally and fiscally draining as their condition typically add stress to the parental relationship. Nevertheless, it is important to these
childrens future that parents learn to cope and, hopefully, remain together, or at least learn to act as a team. Research shows that family structure has a significant effect
on "childrens experiences and life trajectories" (Bramlett and Blumberg, 2007, p. 549). Data from the 2003 National Survey of Childrens Health was used to evaluate physical and mental health of
