this affects children and results in much of the feminization of poverty. What are the pros and cons of divorce in America? An examination of literature indicates that the negatives
of divorce far outweigh the few positives. Prior to no-fault divorce, divorce law painted one partner as "bad and the other good," as there were specific injuries, such as
adultery, which were considered to be grounds for seeking a divorce (Plunkett 48). No-fault divorce statutes officially made the legal process of obtaining a divorce non-adversarial (Adams and Coltrane 17).
In other words, it was no longer necessary in the eyes of the law to find one party guilty of "fault." On the positive side, this reform did away with
a great deal of hypocrisy, which was intrinsic in this system, as it frequently resulted in collusion between participants and the court in order to meet the requirements of law
(Adams and Coltrane 17). Another outdated notion addressed by divorce law reform was the idea of unhappy spouses keeping their marriage together for the sake of their children. However,
commentators have pointed out that research studies indicate that after a generation or so of experimentation with "all manner of step-dads, moms boyfriends, and such," the results are in
