not just on the marital unit but on the family as a whole and, in fact, society in general. Divorce typically results in significant emotional and economic impact.
Only part of that impact is endured by those that have failed in their marital commitment. Divorce, however, is a preventable phenomena. Couples contemplating marriage and those that
have already made the commitment can benefit from a number of primary preventative strategies. Those strategies, however, must be implemented in consideration of the fact that the marital commitment
must be able to withstand a variety of societal pressures which are quite distinct from those withstood by marriages just a couple of generations ago.
As has been noted, there are a variety of stressors involved in marriage and those stressors have changed over time. Indeed, The social institution which
our society refers to as marriage, the commitment of one individual to another to work together as one in domestic pursuits such as raising children, has changed considerably over time
in regard to the roles that men play as opposed to those women play. Two factors are particularly big stressors in todays marriages. Those factors are money and
gender expectations. The literature has recognized the fact that gender roles in society in general have changed through time. In recent years in particular, female roles have in
many cases moved out of their confinement to family and home and into positions as presumed equals to men. This fact is reflected not only in the media and
