of diversity issues and relays the fact that two decades ago, the issue became quite prominent1. The author also includes a great deal of information on the topic, beginning with
this telling line: "Masters of diversity are those who can manage the multiple personality of the workforce and bridge the great cultural divide.2" The author also talks about how
things were years ago and uses the N.Y.P.D. as an example. Smith explains that many years ago, a good number of police officers were of Irish decent, but today, there
is much more diversity3. Smith also talks about stereotypes and for example, the idea that Asians are brainy to some extent renders them quiet4. In other words, the existence of
the stereotype itself prompts behavioral change in the workplace. This is a good point, but it is by no means an original observation. Many authors have looked at the effects
of stereotyping, which serve to alter beahivor in general. Also, while the article points to valid commentary, the author does to an extent make points that are superfluous at best,
and insulting at worst. By accentuating stereotypes, it seems as if he is relaying information that is not exactly true. Yes, perhaps his observations take him to certain anecdotes that
exist, but the author loses the big picture and then only speculates on the reasons for workplace diversity. The article seems to suggest that diversity is something that has
occurred over the years, rendering old paradigms a thing of the past. Yet, the author fails to explain why this has occurred, at least to satisfaction. Why have things changed
