on the surface do understand what diversity is, even though definitions vary. It seems as if it is the acceptance and cohesiveness of different groups of people. Diversity for some
represents living with people of other groups, or working with a variety of peoples. It represents different things to different people and it should be said that much depends on
context. There is a great deal of literature that focuses on medias portrayal of minorities (Ungerleider, 1991). In the context of this literature, the under-representation of minorities in terms
of mass media advertising has been noted (Ungerleider, 1991). Minorities are also underrepresented in dramatic programming; when they do appear, the programming distorts reality and provides stereotypical representations of minorities
(Ungerleider, 1991). These distorted representations of minorities are found in terms of experts commenting on affairs or as newsmakers (Ungerleider, 1991). To some extent this is true today. However, to
be fair, Ungerleider writes in the early 1990s. Things have changed a great deal. Currently, as Barrack Obama makes his way towards the presidency, and is doing well in
the polls, there is a sense that diversity is a reality. In fact, the ticket to the white house-taking into account both political parties-includes a white Catholic man, a man
who is half black, a white woman, and an older man. If any of these individuals were applying for a job, they would be protected under discrimination laws. Each candidate
is representative of a minority to an extent. Ageism is certainly a problem today, and by the time someone is in their 50s, they are often viewed as obsolete in
