diversity on learning and addressing the needs of the school population as a learning community. Background of the School In a school district of 37,000 students, educators at
Louise A. Spencer School are responsible for the education of 601 learners in grades K-8. Approximately 98% of the student population of is minority learners, including a large African
American population. Many of the learners in this school are also socioeconomically disadvantaged, with approximately 82% of the learners qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program. This
mirrors much of the Newark community as a whole, which is approximately 90% minority, with 90% qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program. In the school, 32% of
