McSweeney (2002) contends that there are cultural differences by nation as relayed by Geert H. Hofstede and that these differences have implications for human resource professionals. Indeed, by discerning differences in the way people live their lives, management becomes easier. Hofstedes model is very helpful to that end. Hofstede did a well known study using questionnaires from employees at IBM who came from different countries; the researcher used their responses to make assumptions about the nations in which they work (McSweeney, 2002). HR professionals must take these things into considerations. Also, diversity issues crop up in the areas of affirmative action, for which some firms must be held accountable. Affirmative action is simply one thing related to diversity. There are many state and federal, as well as local, laws and regulations with which companies must comply (Dominguez, 2007). HR also often has to engage in more significant screening processes in order to subdue workplace threats in order to prevent attacks; they must also design preparedness plans or sensitivity management on the changing nature of diversity (Dominguez, 2007). The use of enabling technologies allows one to promote flexible work arrangements, as well as to reduce the cost of outsourcing and so forth (Dominguez, 2007). Diversity is very important as it pertains to the role of Human Resources. General Mills is a company that has embraced a sense of the relevance of diversity. Its HR practices are stellar.
