focus on the four year university. Gilmore Girls for example was a television series that saw its protagonist along with her friends vying for positions at Harvard and Yale. In
looking at graduate schools, one of the characters made a decision to become a doctor based on whether or not the institution was more prestigious than an equivalent law school.
While many counselors advise students to do what they love (and the money will follow), it seems as if the world works in such a way as to reward social
status and money as opposed to talent. This means that when someone goes to community college, there is a perception that he or she has already failed. Of course, community
college is actually an excellent place for students who have not done well in high school, or who have done well but find going away to a university too costly,
either financially or emotionally. Community colleges do not have dorms so there is less shenanigans. This is usually pleasing for parents and those students who really want to avoid trouble.
Yet, at the community college level, there needs to be sensitivity to socio-economic status and other elements pertinent to the student population. Again, students how are born with silver spoons
can attend the Ivy leagues, so many who attend community college-the lowest cost higher education in America-will likely be from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The majority will be poor to middle
class and many are minorities. Minority students tend to be less persistent and they are not as academically prepared when compared with white students (Szelenyi, 2001). Additionally, students in community
colleges may have other attributes that the students of four year universities do not. They may have disabilities that prohibit them from going to schools far from their homes. They
