and sit on boards. No longer is there tolerance of an unfair system that excludes women and people of other races. At the same time, while this appears to be
a more positive model, it creates more work for Human Resource managers. The impact of the composition of the workforce has an effect on HRM practices and activities. Clearly, there
are practices tied to race and gender such as affirmative action programs, but also, there are other issues that Human Resources encounters. To meet demands of a diverse workforce, which
will include variances not only in terms of race and gender, but also in respect to age, country of origin, language and other aspects, HR personnel must implement new programs.
Bernardin (2007) recommends a flexible response from HR due to the changing business environments. Indeed, flexibility seems to be key to success in the changing business environment. While diversity has
often included issues related to age, gender and race, a new issue has cropped up in recent times and affects HR a great deal. That is, same sex relationships have
been more and more recognizable as legitimate lifelong partnerships. This has prompted many companies to allow full benefits for the "significant other" of a worker, even if that individual is
of the same sex. While true legal marriage is usually unavailable for gay and lesbian couples, HR has taken the lead in seeing that the partners of homosexual workers are
