Diversity can be viewed as a threat to the Canadian economy only in the form of initial government expense in the structure that provides financial assistance to new immigrants. Overall, however, diversity represents nothing but pure opportunity for the Canadian economy, because the open Canadian character does not waste time and energy trying to prevent these adventuresome souls from pursuing the dreams they hold for themselves and their families. have brought "diversity" out of the realm of euphemism and into that of stark reality. Canadas neighbors to the South have struggled literally for generations with the issue; the
question here is whether diversity is good for Canadas economy. Effects of Diversity Euro-centric individuals and social systems in the United States sought
to maintain the status quo for years. It was not until greater portions of the US population stopped being marginalized that the US economy truly took off to grow
at rates that astounded practically everyone. Canada and the US have occupied opposite ends of the immigration spectrum for well more than a
century. As America welcomed nearly all comers to provide labor for the burgeoning economy, Canada made immigration difficult and did not particularly welcome those who were actually able to
immigrate. As the US shifted away from such liberal immigration policies, Canada began to relax stringent requirements and quota-based restrictions. Today, "Canada has seen an increase in immigration,
which is shown in the diversity of the populations of Vancouver and Toronto" (Welcome to the world, 1999; p. S9). Unlike the US, diversity "is celebrated in Canada" (Welcome
to the world, 1999; p. S9). Most of the current immigrants to Canada originate in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and China, bringing a language diversity to which Canada is well
accustomed with its long-standing Francophone population. The result is that "language diversity is seen as a strength for the economy, while racial tensions are low" (Welcome to the world,
