and social harmony is the trend upon which contemporary issues of diversity reside. Only within the past two decades has significant attention been paid to the issues concerning
at-risk students and their ability to learn in the existing educational system. For example, Latino students face a constant uphill battle when it comes to obtaining the same degree
of education as their Caucasian counterparts. Being forced to assimilate into a cultural existence so different from their own is enough of a challenge; however, the mounting pressure of
other circumstances - including the absence of multilingual programs on the school curricula, teacher apathy, a general lack of educational diversity and the presence of cultural and social influences -
only increases the pressure these students already experience on a daily basis. The extent to which Latino students are educationally paralyzed has been noted by more and more educators who
are taking a stand against academic segregation. It has become quite clear that minorities of all kinds suffer from an inability to fulfill their academic requirements for no other
reason than they are not offered the same educational opportunities, with the English language often proving to be the barrier. The efforts made to correct this problem have been
both limited and ineffective; the combative environment that is often the schools location precludes Latino students from overcoming the inherent barriers that exist within their compromised community. However, not
all are convinced that the diversity of a bilingual existence is the best for Latino students to enhance the learning experience. "Hispanic Americans are divided on the issue of
