illustrate the issues involving diversity communication patterns is to examine the importance of norms, roles and the expectations every culture has where interaction is concerned. Acceptable proximity between two
people, for example is a social norm that - while not mandated by any written law - is an unbreakable code by which people are expected to abide. Crossing
this invisible barrier causes the recipient of such an action to become immediately uncomfortable by exhibiting telltale sign of said uneasiness. This socially-imposed
ideal distance between two people wholly depends upon the two individuals engaged within the conversation; if they are already acquainted to a degree where there exists a definite comfort level,
then proximity is allowed to be closer than with two complete strangers. Encroaching upon a strangers invisible line, on the other hand, instigates defensive posture such as folding arms
in front of ones body, avoiding direct eye contact by diverting ones glance to the ground or elsewhere and taking a step or two backward in an attempt to re-establish
the broken barrier. Examining the way in which older people react to encroachment of proximity in comparison to others of a much younger
age, one will often find how they appreciate the closeness inherent to the broken barrier, inasmuch as the elderly are not nearly as socially defensive as those decades younger than
