There is no doubt that in the upcoming years the majority of the American citizens will not be of European ancestry and as such it seems imperative that new approaches to dealing with the most basic American institutions (i.e. education, politics, and volunteering) will need to alter the way they engage and attract the public. The article Diversifying the Volunteer Base: Latinos and Volunteerism by Beverly B. Hobbs addresses an aspect of this truth. The following paper summarizes her research article. Diversify the Volunteer Base Hobbs (2001) indicates that, "Capturing the volunteer potential of diverse community members will enrich organizations by expanding the number of volunteers, by making services more culturally appropriate, and by bringing diverse viewpoints to inform practice...However, many organizations are finding it difficult to attract volunteers from diverse backgrounds." This is likely due to the fact that the society has been run by Anglos and thus follows a particular social pattern that is Anglo. The world of the Latin American individuals is diverse and the social patterns of the Anglo do not often fall in line with those from Latin American cultures. Hobbs illustrates that methods of attracting volunteers from the Anglo world do not work with the Latino culture. It is interesting to note, as Hobbs points out, that the Latino people are familiar with volunteerism from a wealthy perspective. They recognize volunteering as something that the wealthy do for the poor. As such most of the Latinos in the nation have never volunteered themselves and do not have a direct understanding of volunteerism.
