, Inc. by K. Von Huben 6/2010 Please Introduction The 2009 film District 9 became a huge, and unexpected,
hit for its makers. Shot in South Africa by a newcomer and with a cast of unknowns, the film did have one big name: Peter Jackson was on board as
its producer. Even so, its success was a surprise. This paper discusses the film and its parallels to real life. Discussion The film is brutal, which makes the fact that
it has real-life parallels unsettling. The story is fairly simple: a group of outsiders is stranded in a community that doesnt want them, so they are herded into one specific
area and kept there. The area, District 9, turns into a slum, and the newcomers invariably come into conflict with those who are keeping them confined. And thats about it.
There is no happy ending or easy resolution to the issues presented. The kicker is, of course, that the newcomers are aliens from space. First, lets consider the film
itself. The director, Neill Blomkamp, is a South African, so in telling the story of displaced aliens he is really examining his countrys history of apartheid and the damage it
has caused. He tells much of the backstory by using a "faux-documentary style," using grainy footage and what appear to be newsreels to tell the story of the "Prawns" and
