playing. Hopefully Ryan Rendleman had on his favorite musician, Bob Dylan. Hopefully he was, at least for the moment, distracted as he sat behind the wheel of his
car waiting for the line of traffic in front of him to move on. Graduation, after all, was only a few days away and Rendleman had much to think
about. His whole life was ahead of him. In just the blink of an eye, however, lives change. Distracted driving is too often responsible for those changes.
Indeed, an estimated fifteen percent of all car accidents are attributable to distracted driving (Levine, 2006). There are many culprits
that distract our attention for that one critical instant while driving and cause us to have an accident. Many of these are electronic intrusions into our lives. Others,
however, can be as simple as rubbernecking. Rubbernecking, in fact, causes twenty-seven percent of all distraction-related driving accidents (Levine, 2006). In many cases we are rubbernecking at things
or occurrences outside our cars. Many distractions are found inside as well, however. Driving distractions are indeed rampant in our high-tech world.
We feel the need to be in constant contact with others and consequently the tether of our home phone has been extended to the invisible tether of the ever-present
cell phone. Cell phone use increases a drivers chances of being involved in a serious crash four hundred percent (Levine, 2006). Our attentions are not only diverted as
our cell phones ring when we answer, or perhaps complete a call out on our phones, our attentions are diverted more as we carry on an intensive argument with the
