make their start from different countries in Europe. For example, the Spanish would go to Florida and the French would go to places like Cape Cod (Salisbury, 1984). The nature
of exploration and settlement seemed almost arbitrary. The maps available in the day cannot be compared to what is available today. The explorers to some extent would simply explore and
find their way, and wherever they landed, that would be called home. Of course, this is a generalization and quite a scant explanation of the reality of the day. It
is well known that he explorers would go on to settle and to some extent displace the Indians. They would take their land and alter their culture, to an extent.
The reality is a bit different than what a short synopsis might suggest. What is often left out of these stories of the beginnings of the United States of
America is the fact that the Indians showed a great deal of resistance. They held tight to their heritage, but the colonists would influence them. Further, it was not as
if the white men would infiltrate the region, and seize the land quickly. There was a gradual assimilation, and in the end, the Europeans would own the land and be
in charge. But again, things were not simple. The intricacies of the changes which did occur during the sixteenth century would change North America and the world forever. The
details of the changes which would occur are vast, but when assembling anecdotes, and historical information, a picture begins to emerge. The influence of the Spanish was very different from
the influence of the English for example. Still, both groups would bring Christianity into the mix, which is something that was quite relevant at the time. When Cortes would come
